A time to travel; a time to store. Since most RV owners use their vehicle only portions of the year, RV storage becomes an important decision. If you want to put your vehicle into long-term storage, (more than just a week or so) there are several things you need to do to get it ready.
A good cleaning inside and out not only preserves the RV while in storage but makes it much nicer to come back to. Wash and wax the exterior to remove dirt particles which can damage the vehicle finish. Wash and completely dry all awnings to prevent rot. Clean road dirt from tires and the undercarriage of the RV. Wash the top of the vehicle and check and clean the air conditioner(s).
On the interior, clean out cabinets and drawers to ensure there is nothing to attract pests. Remove all perishable foods and anything else which can freeze or mold. Take out items in boxes which may be vulnerable to varmints. Vacuum carpets and mop floors to remove dust. Empty the refrigerator. Leave refrigerator and freezer door open to prevent mold. Leave cabinet doors open to ensure good air circulation. Close all blinds and curtains to prevent fading upholstery and carpets. Clean shower, sink, and commode. After draining water from the unit, check that all is dry. While cleaning check all seams for any cracks or places that could leak. Look for holes which might leak water or admit rodents or insects. Caulk or fill with expanding foam. If storing for winter months, drain water lines and fill with special RV antifreeze.
Unplug all appliances. Turn off the main electrical breaker. Consider removing batteries and storing elsewhere. Turn off LP appliances and gas supply valve. Cover outside LP gas containers. To preserve tires, inflate to recommended air pressure, put something between tires and ground or asphalt, chock the tires and cover. Change the oil and filter in the engine and fill the fuel tank.
