To get the most use of your self storage unit, organization and proper packing and stacking are imperative. Use the below tips to optimize your space and keep your belongings safe and accessible.

How to Pack a Self Storage Unit

Packing

When packing up your belongings for storage, safety is a primary concern. Wrap odd-shaped breakables in bubble wrap. Fill any empty space within the boxes with crunched up newspaper for added padding so the items won’t shift around. Stack dishes and bowls with paper in between. Store plates on their sides instead of flat. Tape an X across the face of pictures. Consider special glass tape that won’t leave residue. If possible, wrap mattresses and any upholstered furniture. Use blankets to protect wooden furniture.

Stacking

Once your items are securely and neatly packed, how you place them within the storage unit is the next concern. Leave a pathway into the back of the storage unit for easy access. Stack boxes containing light and fragile items on top of heavier, non-breakables. Label everything. It’s best to label all sides of boxes, so no matter how they go in, you’ll be able to see what’s in them without having to rummage through everything. Keep items you intend to use soon or frequently towards the front of the unit.

No matter how long you plan on needing storage, proper packing, stacking, and labeling are important. This way, you’ll have a tidy space and your items will be safe from damage. You’ll also be able to get what you need when you need it without hassle.
